Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib : Hemkund Sahib or Hemkunt Sahib, a Sikh Gurudwara is associated with Tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh. As per his composition 'Bachitar Natak' of 'Dasam Granth', Guru Gobind Singh is believed to have meditated in his previous incarnation / life at Hemkund Sahib.
Hemkund Sahib is located at Hemkunt Parbat Sapat Sring, the "lake of ice" "mountains" adorned with "seven peaks", at the height of 15200 ft in the Chamoli district of Uttrakhand state of India. It is a accessible by foot from Ghangaria or Gobind Ghat (7 kms) and further from Govind Ghat (13 kms) on the Rishikesh-Badrinath Highway.
The search and discovery of Hemkunt Sahib was started somewhere in 19th century whereas it was mentioned in Dasam Granth, which was composed in 1730. Although first geographical location of Hemkund was traced by Pandit Tara Singh Narotam in 1884, it was published only in 1929 by Bhai Vir Singh in 1929 in his book called “Sri Kalgidhar Chamatkar”. Sant Sohan Singh, a retired Indian Army Sikh Granthi of Gurudwara in Tehri Garhwal read this book and started searching for 'Tap Asthan' on his own. After many diffiulties, he located Hemkund Lake and the place. He shared the information with Bhai Veer Singh who visited the site with him and were convinced that the Guru's description of Tap Asthan matched the site found.
In 1935, Sohan Singh met Modan Singh a Havaldar who later devoted his full life in the service of Hemkund Sahib. The first building of Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib was constructed in 1936.
Sri Hemkund Sahib is accessible only in the summer, between June and October so Hemkund Tours and Tour Packages are only available from May 25 to Oct 10 every year. <
